Always doing what’s right for the patient was likely one of the main drivers that got you through medical school. However, often when presenting the facts and advice with patients’ best interests in mind, the advice somehow doesn’t seem to stick.
According to a recent survey by the CEREC Academy, the reasons for not following through with the dental treatment plan range from insufficient communication and unclear added value to general distrust towards clinicians. The complex issue of distrust requires education and open discussion at the societal level, but as a dental practitioner putting special emphasis on communication and how information is delivered can already make a significant difference.

As per CEREC Academy’s survey, video is by far the most efficient tool to encourage patients to follow through with their treatment recommendations. Specifically, according to the survey respondents, videos with a certain look and feel, simple but relevant information and short duration had a positive and encouraging impact on 9 out of 10 patients.
