10 reasons to use dental video

Jul 14, 2016 2:00:00 PM / by Minna Lehtovaara

Working with Futudent dental camera, I regularly come across dental professionals who ask "why should I use video?" Well, there are many different answers, depending on the dental professional's focus I am talking to. However, below you can find my personal top 10, based upon actual user cases from our dental camera users all over the world.

 1. Documentation

Video helps you document your work in an easy, time-saving manner. Rather than sit behind your computer immediately after your patient has left the room, and try to remember all observations, you already have documented your work on video and can review it at any given time.

2. Teaching

This is seen both in the academic as well as in the private education sector: show students exactly what you see during a procedure. You can do this live on big screens, record it at the same time and later edit and share it with students as you see fit.

3. Evaluation of student

In addition to showing your point of view to students, you an also use Futudent to evaluate your students: instead of looking over their shoulders when they perform procedures, you can conveniently watch on a screen how they perform and give feedback. And if you cannot be on location while your student performs a procedure: no problem! The student simply records everything and sends the video through the secure cloud to you for review and commenting!

4. Patient education

A picture says more than a thousand words, and this is certainly true when you show your patients their oral health situation. But rather than working with a clumsy mirror ("is the angle right?"), you can sit comfortably with your patient next to a screen, zoom in an out and review the treatment options - and increase your acceptance rate! And what is even better: that same video can be send directly to your patient using MyDentalbook, so that instructions are not immediately forgotten but can be conveniently reviewed in the comfort of their own home.

5. Treatment plans for pediatric and geriatric patients

Whether it is your young patients or your elderly patients with memory difficulties, nothing says "I care about the patient" more than shared instructions for your patients' caretakers. Parents, family members and nursing personnel will know exactly how to support their loved one's dental hygiene through your shared videos.

6. Referrals

Let's face it, what is easier: sending a video of a patient to a colleague for referral immediately after you finished your work or interrupt a procedure with a handheld camera after which you need to upload the pictures, type your notes and maybe even still call your colleague? Referrals and second opinions cannot be easier and faster than with Futudent dental camera!

7. Legal

Even though all the other reasons are good, positive ones, this one need to be mentioned as well: record your work for legal reasons. In an environment where malpractice suites are unfortunately nowadays all to common, it is good to have the proverbial "stick behind the door". By documenting your work, you have direct proof what was done and any claimed malpractice can be immediately disproved.

8. Quality control

This is a great means to ensure quality control in your clinic: when you have a new (recently graduated) colleague starting, Futudent dental camera is a great means of ensuring quality, both for the clinic as well as towards your patients.

9. Marketing

What can be cooler than being the regional video dentist? What can be more useful than showing your patients instructions, in their own mouth? Rather then hire expensive video and marketing companies, you can now make your own instruction and marketing videos at a budget that does not break the bank.

10. Communication with your technician

Whether it is a picture, a video or even a live stream when you fit prosthetics, nothing beats (live) images in your communication with your technician and dental lab. And it will save you time, because interruptions over the phone will be significantly reduced.

So, here are 10 reasons to use video in a dental environment. Can you think of more reasons?
