futudent - the future of dental communication

Dentistry student's idea becomes
a ready-to-use service

The days of isolation for dentists are over thanks to a Finnish novelty: the Futudent HD-camera, a tiny, head-mounted, digital camera with a user-friendly software and a cloud-based server, for sharing and storing videos, images and documents.

Product development engineers (M. Sc.) Lars Kåhre and Niko Rusanen developed the Futudent HD-camera to answer the needs of dentistry student Peter Rusanen, who wished for an efficient, easy-to-use camera that would help him study and share his professional experience with colleagues.

The Futudent HD-camera enables HD video and sound recording from the dentist's point of view as he works. The lightweight camera is attached to the dentist's magnifying loupes. The dentist controls the filming with a foot pedal.

The resulting video needs no editing as the dentist can mark the most important moments of the dental procedure with the pedal while working. To make the viewing nicer, the software presents all the highlighted parts, so there is no difficulty in finding them when viewing the recording. The Futudent HD-camera is so simple to use that it demands no technical expertise. The camera is attached to a computer with a USB cable.

The recorded videos can be uploaded to the user's private portfolio at the Futudent-server for later viewing and sharing. The Futudent-server uses bank-level security, which enables a secure and effective channel for dentists to share information (video, images, documents) without endangering the confidentiality of their patients.

A dentist should never cease his or her continuing professional development. Sharing professional experience and concrete cases with colleagues will provoke dialogue and exchange of views. The dentist's work is often lonely and isolated. The Futudent-cloud opens the door to the world of other professionals: it makes consultations and the flow of information possible and easy.

The HD-camera supports the pedagogical work of teachers in dentistry schools as students can go back over and over again to a certain dental procedure. The system also optimizes the communication between teachers and students, and allows students to record their practices and progress for a more individualized educational experience.
